Women's lives, women's work, 1900-1960.

Presents the oral histories of nine women who, with one exception, were born in the period 1885-1900. Although they all ended up in southern California, their family and community lives were played out in other parts of the country. Work was a necessity for them, but few had the education, skills or resources to exercise many options. Black, Brown and White, urban and rural, they were both typical and, in some cases, atypical of the women of their race/ethnicity, class, region and period. Their accounts afford us a glimpse into the lives of ordinary women in the first half of the 20th century. The narrators include: Elizabeth Anderson, Victoria Casilles, Eliza Harrison, Barbara Kalish, Sadie Kastleman, Beatrice NeView, Dora Rosenzweig, Lottie Lee Spharler, and Sophia Zamora.
